3M Rubbing Compound 05973 liquid abrasive 1 qt — high-cut paint correction for clearcoat, lacquer, enamel

3M Rubbing Compound 05973 is a professional liquid abrasive that quickly removes sand scratches, stains and surface blemishes to restore automotive and industrial paint finishes.

This one-quart liquid formula from 3M is designed to speed up paint correction by providing aggressive yet controllable cutting power for clearcoats, lacquer and enamel finishes. It’s formulated to reduce compounding time so technicians spend less time working a panel and more time completing jobs. Use it during auto restoration, collision repair blending, or industrial refinishing when you need dependable material removal with a finish that’s ready for follow-up polishing.

How does this rubbing compound fix sand scratches and surface blemishes?

The compound contains abrasive agents in a liquid carrier that work to abrade and level the high spots left by sanding or minor damage. Applied with a pad and buffer, it cuts through the blemished layer and leaves a surface that takes subsequent polishing more evenly. Results depend on pad choice, speed and technique.

• Liquid formula reduces clogging and spreads evenly across the panel.
• High-cut formulation targets sanding marks and stains quickly.
• Compatible with orbital or rotary machines when used with proper pads.

Is it safe to use on my vehicle’s clearcoat, lacquer, or enamel finishes?

This 3M rubbing compound was developed to be safe for a range of topcoats when applied correctly and followed by appropriate polishing steps. It’s aggressive enough to remove defects but formulated to minimize over-cutting when technicians follow recommended techniques. Always test in an inconspicuous area first and use the right pad and speed for the paint system.

• Suitable for clearcoats, lacquer, and enamel paints when used as directed.
• Recommended test spot before full-panel application to confirm compatibility.
• Follow with finer polishing products for high-gloss finish restoration.

How will this product change my workflow and job times?

Because of its higher cutting rate, 3M 05973 can shorten the time needed to remove sanding marks and embedded blemishes. That efficiency reduces the number of passes and the amount of follow-up compounding required. Shops focused on throughput and consistent results will find it helps streamline multi-panel jobs.

• Reduces compounding passes compared with lower-cut compounds.
• Speeds up prep before finishing polishes and sealants.
• Economical quart size for frequent shop use.

Who is this for: 3M Rubbing Compound 05973 is intended for professional technicians, collision repair shops, automotive restorers and industrial refinishers who need an effective, economical compound for medium-to-heavy defect removal. It’s meant for occupational or industrial use where experienced operators can pair the product with appropriate pads, tools and follow-up polishes to achieve a high-quality finish.
