Kit for the cottage run, the ski weekend and moving day: hitch balls, mounts and locks, roof racks and cargo boxes, hitch-mounted bike racks, ski and snowboard carriers, ratchet straps and cargo nets, trailer wiring and adapters, towing mirrors and cargo bags. Canadian distances are long and the gear is bulky, so we favour carriers rated for highway speed and hardware that shrugs off salt.

What to look for: a roof rack matched to your roof type (raised rails, flush rails, fixed points or bare roof) and a cargo box within your roof’s dynamic load limit; hitch accessories that match your receiver size (1-1/4 or 2 inch) and your vehicle’s tow rating; and a 4-pin or 7-pin connector that matches the trailer. Straps should state a working load limit, not just a breaking strength.
