The Blue Sea Systems 285-Series 70A surface-mount breaker is a combined switch and medium-duty circuit protector designed for windlasses, electric winches and marine installations where ignition protection and easy surface mounting are required.
This single-unit device replaces a separate on/off switch and fuse by combining both functions: it operates as a manual switch while providing engineered overcurrent protection with a visible trip lever. Built for marine environments, the 285-Series is water resistant and ignition protected so it can be installed in engine compartments of gasoline-powered craft. Terminal studs on the face simplify wiring and the connected terminal caps reduce accidental contact and cross-current shorts during installation and service.
The 285-Series integrates switching and overload protection so you control power and protect the circuit with one device. Its Trip-Free mechanism forces the breaker to open if a fault occurs and prevents it from being held closed under overload. A clear, visible lever indicates whether the breaker has tripped, making fault diagnosis faster.
Yes — the 285-Series is ignition protected, so it meets the safety requirements for installation in gasoline engine compartments. Its water-resistant housing tolerates typical marine spray and humidity, though it is not intended for continuous submersion. Connected terminal caps add an extra layer of protection against accidental contact and shorts in tight engine-room installations.
The breaker’s terminals are located on the face, so you can wire it without access to the rear — ideal for bulkhead or panel mounting. It drops in as a replacement for the older 185 series, minimizing retrofit work. The visible lever simplifies troubleshooting and the robust mechanical construction supports repetitive operation in demanding marine service.
When the protected circuit draws excessive current, the breaker trips open automatically and the lever pops to indicate the fault. Because it is Trip-Free, you cannot force it back into the ON position while the fault condition persists, preventing further damage. After correcting the cause of the overload, the breaker can be manually reset.
Who is this for? The Blue Sea Systems 285-Series 70A surface-mount breaker is aimed at boat owners, installers and marine electricians who need a reliable, compact circuit protector that also serves as a switch. It is particularly well suited to windlass and electric winch circuits, retrofit projects replacing older 185-Series breakers, and applications where ignition protection and surface mounting are required. Its combination of clear trip indication, face-mounted terminals, terminal caps and a five-year warranty make it a practical choice for demanding marine electrical systems.
Q: Is the 285-Series suitable for engine compartments?
A: Yes. The breaker is ignition protected and water resistant, allowing installation in gasoline engine rooms.
Q: Can this replace a 185-Series breaker?
A: Yes. The 285-Series is a drop-in replacement for 185-Series breakers and uses the same mounting footprint.
