Performance Tool telescoping hood prop rod 18.5–40 in — steel construction, twist-lock with rubber end caps

Performance Tool W1475 is an adjustable telescoping hood prop rod that secures vehicle hoods and lids from 18.5 to 40 inches with a twist-lock for stable, hands-free access.

If you service vehicles or do DIY maintenance, a reliable hood support is essential for safety and convenience. The Performance Tool W1475 telescoping prop rod gives you quick, adjustable support for a wide range of cars and trucks. Built from steel with rubber end caps and a twist-lock mechanism, it’s designed to fit multiple hood heights while collapsing compactly for storage.

How does the W1475 keep a hood open safely?

The W1475 uses a simple mechanical twist-lock to secure the extended length so it won't slip during use. Rubber caps at both ends protect painted surfaces and provide a non-slip contact point against the hood and engine bay. Because it locks into set positions, it stops gradual collapse and lets you work hands-free.

• Twist-lock action secures the selected length in place.
• Steel construction resists bending under typical loads.
• Rubber end caps prevent scratches and improve grip.
• Three preset indexed positions for consistent height choices.

Will it fit my vehicle’s hood or trunk?

The rod extends from 18.5 inches up to 40 inches, covering short compact hoods through full-size truck engine bays. Its telescoping design gives a wide range of reach, and the indexed positions make it easy to choose a stable length. For trunks or other lids, ensure the contact points align and the load is within the prop’s capacity.

• Minimum length: 18.5 inches for compact vehicles or tight spaces.
• Maximum length: 40 inches for tall hoods or deep engine compartments.
• Collapses to under 2 feet for compact storage.
• Compatible with most cars and trucks when positioned correctly.

How simple is it to set up and store?

Setup is a one-person task: extend the rod, align the ends, then twist to lock the chosen length. The indexed stops make it fast to repeat the same height on future jobs, and rubber caps maintain a secure seated position. When the job’s done, the rod collapses quickly and stores flat in a toolbox or under a seat.

• One-handed extension and twist-lock operation.
• Indexed positions speed repeat adjustments.
• Compact profile folds down to less than 24 inches for storage.
• Durable finish resists garage wear for repeated use.

What materials and durability features does it have?

The prop rod is made from steel for strength and longevity during routine garage use. The rubber end caps protect paint and provide a friction surface that reduces slippage. Because it’s a simple mechanical tool, maintenance is minimal—keep it clean and free of debris and periodically check the twist-lock for secure engagement.

• Steel shaft engineered for repeated load cycles.
• Rubber protective caps to prevent surface damage.
• Simple twist-lock reduces moving-part failures.
• Compact, rugged design built for workshop environments.
