3M Tape Primer 94 adhesion promoter — Light Yellow 1 qt can, fast-drying for plastics & metals

3M Tape Primer 94 is a fast-drying adhesion promoter formulated to improve tape, film, and vinyl bonding to hard-to-stick substrates.

Used widely in industrial and automotive settings, this light-yellow primer prepares surfaces such as polyethylene, polypropylene, ABS, PET/PBT blends, painted and bare metals, wood, concrete and glass so pressure-sensitive tapes (including 3M VHB) perform reliably. It dries in minutes under normal conditions and is available in a 1 quart (32 fl oz) can for batch work or frequent use. Proper surface cleaning and application technique are key to achieving consistent results.

How does this primer improve tape adhesion on difficult plastics?

The primer modifies the surface energy of low-energy plastics so pressure-sensitive adhesive can wet and bond effectively. One thin, uniform coat is usually enough; porous substrates sometimes need a second pass after the first coat dries.

• Recommended for polyethylene, polypropylene, ABS and PET/PBT blends
• Promotes bonding of 3M VHB and other pressure-sensitive tapes
• Apply minimally—over-application can reduce performance
• Porous materials may require two coats with drying time between

What’s the best way to apply and dry Primer 94 for consistent results?

Apply a thin, even layer using a brush, swab, knurled roller or pressurized flow gun depending on the area size. At room temperature the primer typically dries in about five minutes; ensure the primed surface remains free of contaminants before tape application.

• Small areas: brush or swab for precise coating
• Larger areas: pressurized flow gun or roller for uniform coverage
• Allow ~5 minutes drying at room temperature before taping
• Keep primed surfaces protected from dust, oils and moisture

How do I prepare and clean surfaces before using this primer?

Good adhesion starts with a clean, dry surface. Remove dust, grease, release agents and other contaminants; for many applications an isopropyl alcohol wipe-down is effective. Vigorous wiping or scrubbing may be required for heavy soils.

• Clean surface thoroughly—use isopropyl alcohol for many materials
• Dry completely before applying primer
• Avoid touching primed area before tape application
• Remove excess primer with isopropyl alcohol if needed

Who is this for? 3M Tape Primer 94 is intended for industrial and professional users who need reliable adhesion on low-energy or challenging substrates—automotive detailers, sign and graphic installers, fabricators working with plastics and metals, and manufacturing technicians using pressure-sensitive tapes. It is not intended for consumer retail use; follow occupational safety guidance, ventilation, and handling instructions when using the product.
