Blue Sea Systems 5189 is a 250-amp, beige terminal fuse engineered to protect large DC battery banks with a visible blown indicator and marine-compatible ignition protection.
This terminal fuse is built for demanding onboard and stationary DC systems where a reliable main-circuit protective device is required. Designed to meet ABYC expectations for DC Main circuit protection, the 5189 combines a high available interrupting capacity at 14V DC with a clear blown indicator, IP66 water resistance, and a compact form meant to work only with Blue Sea terminal fuse blocks. Install it correctly and it becomes a straightforward insurance policy against high-current faults in large battery strings.
The 5189 is rated 250A and specified to provide up to 10,000 AIC at 14V DC, which addresses ABYC guidance for DC main protection on big battery systems. Its construction interrupts fault currents quickly, minimizing damage to wiring and equipment while giving a clear visual sign when replacement is required.
Do not mount this fuse directly to a battery terminal; it must be used with the matching Blue Sea terminal fuse blocks (PN 5191 or PN 2151). Following the manufacturer's mounting and wiring guidance ensures correct electrical and mechanical connection and preserves the product's safety attributes like ignition protection.
Yes. The 5189 is ignition-protected for gasoline-powered vessels and carries an IP66 rating, which means it tolerates powerful water jets and resists ingress that could compromise operation. Those features make it appropriate for exposed battery compartments and engine-room installations when used as intended.
The fuse has a maximum DC voltage rating of 58V and provides a reliable interruption performance for heavy-duty DC circuits. The product is shipped in a single pack and includes a visible blown condition indicator so operators can quickly identify a failed fuse and restore service with minimal troubleshooting.
Who is this for? The Blue Sea Systems 5189 is aimed at boat owners, marine electricians, fleet operators, and anyone managing large DC battery banks who needs a dependable main-circuit fuse that complies with ABYC guidance, offers easy visual fault detection, and performs reliably in wet, vibration-prone environments. Choose this fuse when you want a rugged, install-with-a-block solution that keeps maintenance simple and circuits protected.
Q: Can I mount the 5189 directly on a battery terminal?
A: No. The 5189 must be installed in a compatible terminal fuse block (PN 5191 or PN 2151) and not directly on the battery post.
Q: Does the 5189 work in marine engine compartments?
A: Yes. It is ignition-protected for gasoline-powered boats and has an IP66 rating suitable for wet environments.
