DPTOOL's 10mm back tap is a heavy-duty M10x1.0 thread chaser designed to restore damaged spark plug threads quickly and without removing the cylinder head.
If a spark plug thread in an aluminum or steel cylinder head has been cross‑chased, overtightened, or partially stripped, this DPTOOL back tap lets you clean and re‑form the thread in place. The tool traps metal shavings with grease so debris is pulled out when you extract it, reducing the risk of foreign material dropping into the combustion chamber. Built from heat‑treated 42CrMo (4140‑equivalent) steel, the chaser is made to resist wear and impact so it remains precise through repeated use.
The tool expands inside the damaged M10x1.0 hole to re‑form and chase the original thread profile, removing burrs and reshaping flattened sections. Because it’s a back tap, you don’t need to remove the cylinder head or install a coil insert unless the thread is beyond repair.
No — the recommended procedure uses grease on the tool’s threads so shavings adhere to the chaser and are withdrawn with it. That containment method minimizes the chance of loose metal entering the combustion chamber, keeping internal components safer during repair.
Yes — manufactured from 42CrMo steel (equivalent to 4140), the tool is quenched and tempered for high fatigue resistance and toughness. That material choice delivers impact resistance and reduced brittleness, so it stands up to the stresses of professional or DIY use.
Work slowly and deliberately: push the chaser straight into the hole, expand, then back‑thread a few rotations. When you meet resistance, back off slightly, rotate laterally, and proceed; repeated gentle passes remove remaining material without overcutting.
Who this is for: mechanics, home enthusiasts, and restoration professionals who need an economical way to rescue M10x1.0 spark plug threads without head removal. It’s ideal when threads are cross‑chased or partially stripped but the head and surrounding metal remain reusable. If the thread wall is missing entirely or the hole requires a helicoil, this tool may be a preparatory step or not sufficient alone. DPTOOL backs the product with a 12‑month warranty for peace of mind.
Q: Can this tool fix any M10x1.0 spark plug thread damage?
A: It repairs many cross‑chased or partially stripped M10x1.0 threads but won’t replace missing thread material or damaged head walls; those may need inserts or machining.
Q: Do I need special training to use the back tap?
A: No special certification, but careful, slow technique and proper alignment are required to avoid further damage; follow the grease and reverse‑turn method.
